I need some advise on how to repair an quarter-sawn oak veneer table top that is over MDF. The side table is about 12 years old and the oak veneer is starting to get some micro-cracks that are lifting at the edges of the cracks, probably due to exposure to the sun. One suggestion I got is to try and glue them down and then use a filler but I would like to get suggestions and comments from some experts before proceeding.
No expert here but been doing it a while - still learning as I go.
if you can inject glue - yes glue them down. It also helps to know what the original glue was - e.g. white / yellow - contact cement -
You may need to do some refinishing after regluing depending on how large the problem is.
If your stripping off the finish - then you can try using an iron to heat and press the loose veneers -
Thanks. I'll take a shot at glueing them down...there are a bunch of them. Worse case, if I mess it up, I can just replace the top with a solid oak top and keep the base.
