Just thought some of you might enjoy seeing what a beautiful color soft maple looks like with red mahogany stain on it. This was a custom piece that a customer special ordered. At the begining I thought he was crazy due to the way some maple takes stain, but this is soft maple and Fuhr 155 waterbased stain. While making this box I found that when using Fuhr's stain and then topcoating it that when you sand it back that the dust is the color of the stain( due to the acrylic base in the stain I was told). Their was one coat of stain applied and let dry, then a coat of Fuhr 350 was applied. This was sanded with 400 grit and then three more coats of 350 and then sanded then the decal was applied with three more coats on top of it. Then the piece was sanded with 800 grit then buffed with 1000 grit abralon then 2000 with p091e compound then buffed with 4000 grit with compound then it was waxed. This is a piece that when it was done you could put beside a piano and I think it looked better( but then I made it He He) I Hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it! We have also started making this as Standard item now (see what listening to a customer will do!!!)

Randall,
The color is amazing, and should make a few people re-think their choice of woods. The rubbing out procedure looks a bit complicated and intense for a complete newbie like myself but I really like the color. Thanks for the post. I am enjoying looking at everyones pictures posted here.
