| For several years I have been using Traget Coatings em6000 (or its predecessor Premium Lacquer) as a top coat over wood that was dyed, wash coated with Zinsser Seal Coat, glazed with Behlken glaze, wash coated with Zinsser Seal Coat again and then top coated with four or five coats of em600. Recently I have had several projects with severe craze. Target Coatings said it was a Seal Coat problem. I swithched to dewaxed shellac flakes but the problems continue. Has any one else had this problem? |

Hi,
First time user with a shellac question. It's been a while since I used shellac so I'm hoping someone can give me advice on it.
I am building a fairly large dining room table (40in x 84in) out of reclaimed pine. For the top, I was going to finish it with Zinsser Clear Shellac. Normally for pine I would pre-treat with the pre-conditioner but am wondering if that is required with shellac.
Also, I'm wondering if I might get myself in trouble trying to apply shellac to such a large surface using a brush, given it's quick setting time. I do have a spray gun but don't really have a large enough 'booth' to spray something of that size.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan |

I am refinishing a mahogany end table and would like to remove the red in the grain. I've tried a number of things and have lightened up the general area, but the red is still in the grain. Would using green dye work? Any help would be appreciated.

I have stained some maple cabinet doors with a dark stain (wipe on wipe off). I noticed some swirl marks from my sander so I tried saning by hand with 180 grit paper and restained the color is good but now I see some scratches from the hand sanding going with the grain. If I use a finer grit paper the stain seems to come out lighter in color ,any one that has any suggestions would be much appreciated. I am behind on this one and I am getting ready to top coat these with clear laquer.
Thanks,
Pat |

| I'm building a small cabinet to house a TV for a neighbor. They want it painted, and I was prepared to primer the poplar I've used with Bin and paint with a color of their choice. But they also want it to look "worn" in spots to show an underlayer of dark wood. They were not at all interested in having white show up, even at the edges of a worn spot. How do I accomplish this? If I stain the poplar something dark, how do I prime over that. Can Bin be colored? Can I used some other tinted or transparent primer under a latex top coat? so when I rub out the top coats, I see the dark wood stain? |

| I just want to thank Jeff again for his great teaching and sharing of finishing knowledge. Also a big thanks to Alan Turner for hosting and giving me a place to learn. Now,... can I borrow 150 marriage points to buy some trans tint? |
