What People Are Saying About "Great Wood
Finishes"
"From classic finishes worthy of antiques to homey milk
paint, you'll find the recipe for great results."
-- Beverly DeJulio
host of the PBS series HandyMa'am and HGTV's
HomeWise
"Jeff Jewitt's book is a great comprehensive guide to successful
finishing results."
-- Scott Phillips
of American Woodshop, as seen on public television
"A very common question is for recommendations for the "best" book on
finishing. Most of us have been quick to respond with a recommendation
for Bob Flexner's "Understanding Wood Finishing". Sometimes we would also
include a reference to some books written by others.
There is a new Sheriff in town. I just finished reading Jeff
Jewitt's new book "Great Wood Finishes". In my opinion, this is the
best on the market. It is an easy read....and he repeatedly shows
wonderful finishes that can be accomplished with nothing more than what you
can get at Home Depot. You will love his sections on specialty
finishes and glazing, toning and shading.
Now, when asked "What is the best book on finishing?", it is no
contest - The best is Jeff Jewitt's "Great Wood Finishes"."

"Executive Summary - Great Wood Finishes is quite simply the best book
on
wood finishing yet produced. It is the perfect A-Z book for the raw
beginner, as well as seasoned professional looking to branch-out.
Each chapter is well organized, with sub-chapters having their own
highlights and tables/charts/tips. It is facts, facts, facts, with how-to's
and for-examples, galore. I was particularly enamored of the sections on
spraying. Though I used to spray acrylic lacquer on cars (and not too
badly), I've always been leery of spraying woodwork. Jeff's instructions,
pictures and diagrams breed confidence in even the klutziest wood-dorker.
My favorite section is the specialty finishes section, where Jeff (and
you, the happy reader) puts it all together. Each "finishing session,"
refers back to the techniques, tools and materials covered in the first
two sections, so in case you're fuzzy on something you think you just
learned, you can zip right back to it and review. It makes for a *perfect*
shop reference. This is one book that will not be inside on the bookshelf.
The step-by-step instructions on glazing, white-washing, pickling,
shellacking, etc.,
are nothing short of dead solid perfect. There's no doubt in my mind that
anyone could read those sections and with not much practice, nail those
effects on their project.
I have all the books on woodworking, from Krenov to Hoadley to Frid,
Underhill, Dresdner, and yes... even Norm. For clearly relating the
subject matter - in words, pictures and diagrams, nobody has done it as
clearly as Mr. Jewitt. It's one thing to understand wood finishing, what
Jeff has
produced is the next best thing to having his ability vectored
into your body by Omar the Finishing Channeler."
I guess you could say I liked the book.
