The colors below are pictured on the most common hardwoods.

DRIFTWOOD
This is a light raw umber, a cool brown pigment color with just a touch of green. Use to tone down reds. An excellent color for the various shaded of fumed oak. Not too dark.

PROVINCIAL
A little warmer (orange) and darker than driftwood, it's close to Van Dyke Brown. An excellent color on oak and a good Mission Brown on quarter sawn white oak. Great on mahogany.

COLONIAL MAPLE
This is a burnt sienna color. Great for those slightly red finishes on maple and pine from the 60's. Pushes natural cherry just a bit if you want to darken it. A great base color to redden things or as a toner.

Pine           Birch         Maple     Red Oak   Mahogany Cherry      Walnut

EARLY AMERICAN MAPLE
A good deep medium warm brown similar to burnt umber, this is a great color for those old red maple finishes from the 50's and 60's. On cherry, this is just about the best one-step stain you can get that colors deeply, but doesn't muddy the grain. Great for those real old pine finishes, but to tell you the truth, it looks great on all woods.

Pine           Maple        Birch      Red Oak    Cherry    Mahogany  Walnut

ANTIQUE CHERRY
A similar color to Early American Maple, but a bit redder. This stain is also a good to use to get woods like maple, birch and poplar to look like real cherry.  And, of course, it's a great color for cherry.

Pine           Maple        Birch      Red Oak    Cherry   Mahogany   Walnut

RED OAK
This is the most intense red color we have. A deep, rich red, this will produce those hard to reds you see on commercial furniture.

Pine            Maple       Birch      Red Oak    Cherry    Mahogany  Walnut

RED MAHOGANY
Similar to the color above, but less red and darker. A close color to cordovan, you can use it to match dark cherry finishes.

Pine           Birch        Maple      Red Oak  Mahogany  Cherry     Walnut

SPECIAL WALNUT
This is a basic dark brown, with just a hint orange.  It's a great color for dark Mission finishes. Excellent on white oak, walnut and mahogany for dark browns that aren't too red.

Pine           Maple       Birch      Red Oak    Cherry    Mahogany   Walnut

JACOBEAN
A very rich dark brown that's a bit redder and darker than the Dark Walnut below. An exact match to Van Dyke Brown pigment. The darkest brown color we have.

Pine          Birch          Maple      Red Oak  Mahogany  Cherry     Walnut

DARK WALNUT
This is a dead ringer for dark raw umber, the standard pigment used for "walnut" stains. A dark, cool brown color that's great for any wood that you want dark, but with no red or orange.  An excellent color for dark Mission Oak.

Pine           Maple       Birch      Red Oak    Cherry      Mahogany  Walnut

EBONY
Your basic black. Use for ebonized finishes. Repeated applications will produce very dark blacks but still maintain transparency. Note how the different species of wood used affects the color.

Pine           Birch         Maple     Red Oak   Mahogany  Cherry      Walnut

PICKLED OAK
This is the standard stain for pickling, whitewash, or liming. Titanium white pigment in this acrylic binder produces clean, bright whites that will not yellow and yet is transparent so that grain and figure shows through. When used with General Finishes High Performance Poly or Enduro Clear Acrylic & Poly a transparent, clean and non-yellowing finish is obtained. For hand application, we recommend wood not be sanded past 150 grit and use the wiping series base.
